Midway General: Your First Stop in the UP
Midway General is about a mile up FH-13 from Hiawatha Snow'd Inn, and it's worth knowing about before you arrive. It's a family-owned general store with the kind of practical inventory that makes a remote stay a lot easier.
You can pick up fishing licenses, bait, firewood, groceries and gas all in one stop. They carry fresh local eggs, and if you're heading out on the trails and want to know current conditions, the folks there are usually a reliable source. They also carry UP souvenirs if you want something to bring home.
But it's not just a supply run. Midway General makes their own pizza in-house and has a solid ice cream selection that draws people in on its own. During the summer they typically bring in local musicians, and food trailers have been known to set up outside as well. Check with them directly for current scheduling on those.
It's the kind of place that's easy to take for granted until you realize how convenient it is to have it a mile away rather than 25 minutes into Munising.
